Evelyn’s House provides housing and 24-hour staffing to help a young mother care for herself and her child - and to support her in becoming self sufficient and moving into her own home. A young woman is assisted to enroll in school, enter job training or become employed. All the families are connected with services for health care, counseling, education, employment, child care and special individual needs. At any time, up to seven mothers and their children are living in private rooms and enjoying the larger family-style areas of Evelyn’s House. The home is located at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Utica, NY. The moms and kids of Evelyn’s House benefit greatly from the generous contributions of cash and gifts offered by local groups and individuals. Our success relies greatly on the continued involvement of interested and invested community partners. The young people living at Evelyn’s House also experience the compassion and kindness of volunteers who help with child care, group activities, transportation, holidays and fundraisers. Across the globe, we have more than 25 million members in 122 countries, including 2 million members in 300 local associations in the United States. More important than the numbers, is our mission to eliminate racism and empower women. We provide safe places for women and girls, build strong women leaders, and advocate for women's rights and civil rights in Congress. Women come to us in times of crisis, as survivors of rape or domestic violence. They come for job training and career counseling. They come for childcare. They come for health and fitness. They come for a variety of reasons. But they come. And they leave with a renewed spirit, new skills, and stronger lives. YWCA associations are divided by regions nationwide. This enables our associations to pool resources, provide additional services for their clients and combine their voices for change at the national and local levels. The YWCA Mohawk Valley serves the the region of Oneida and Herkimer Counties. This includes the cities of Utica and Rome, located in Central New York State. Established in 1898, the YWCA Mohawk Valley provides a wide variety of programs and services throughout the area. We currently provide programming for thousands of individuals throughout the Mohawk Valley. Our programs focus on our two chief initiatives, eliminating racism and empowering women. Whether we are facilitating an open dialogue about racism or providing childcare for a mother while she is in family court, we are working diligently to fullfill our mission and provide our community with the resouces needed to create a better future. We are not afraid to make waves and challenge the status quo. Child CareRecognizing both the need for a "safe haven" for children in the courts and the opportunity to reach out to New York's most vulnerable children, the Permanent Judicial Commission on Justice for Children spearheaded the creation of a statewide system of Children's Centers. There are two Children's Center in Oneida County, both are run by the YWCA. The Children's Centers were made possible thanks to a grant from the New York State Unified Court System. This pioneering initiative began with the observation that hundreds of young children are every day brought to our courthouses, because their caregivers have nowhere else to leave them. In courtrooms, the children may be exposed to disturbing proceedings, and their presence is invariably a distraction from judicial business. If kept outside of the courtrooms, young children may have to endure hours of boredom and discomfort in areas where even their safety may be jeopardized. Learn more about our two Children's Center locations: Eleanor Walsh Wertimer Children's Center In the fall of 1999, the YWCA, after receiving a grant from the Permanent Judicial Commission for Justice for Children, opened the Children's Center located at the Oneida County Courthouse. On March 7, 2003, the center was renamed the Eleanor Walsh Wertimer Children's Center in honor of 'Ellie' Wertimer. The Children's Center provides childcare to children (8 weeks-12 years old) who are accompanying their caregivers to court. Children no longer need to be exposed to lengthy court proceedings and damaging testimony. Instead they participate in educational and arts and crafts activities in a safe, supportive and child-friendly environment. These facilities are Hall House, opened in 1981 and Lucy's House, opened twenty years later. In 2005 the YWCA brought New Horizons of the Mohawk Valley under its organizational structure and in 2006 we opened our first transitional housing facility for women and children who are victims of domestic violence, Willow Commons.
